After you've been driving for over a decade, it's easy to get comfortable and more relaxed. However, it doesn't make driving more safe. The more people drive, the more comfortable they feel eating and even talking on their cell phone, while driving. However, technically, those are both forms of distracted driving.
Here are some tips for safe driving, no matter how many years you've been on the road.
Â
(1) Eat Before You Drive
It may not feel like it, but eating before you drive is SMART. If you eat while you drive, you're risking being able to pay attention to the road. It may not seem like a big deal, but the more focused on you on the road, the better. When possible, eat before you drive. Better yet, go inside the restaurant, so you're not tempted to eat while driving.
Â
(2) Block All Incoming Texts and Phone Calls
As humans with cell phones, we are tuned into our phones. When we hear it beep or buzz, we want to check it. Well, when you're driving, this just isn't safe! Block all incoming texts and phone calls from reaching your phone, while you're driving. If you have a newer iPhone, the software automatically does this. However, if you have an Android, you should be able to download apps to help you out with this.
Â
(3) Focus on the Road
This is SO hard, but leave all distractions behind and just focus on the road. Tune your radio to what you want it to, before you drive. Try to tune out the kids, even if they're throwing cereal at you and screaming at the top of their lungs. At all costs, keep focused on the road.
Â
(4) Drive with Good Posture
It's safe to say that a lot of people drive with one leg up or with only one arm on the steering wheel. It's time to focus completely on the road again! Sit up straight, put both hands on the wheel, and both feet on the floor.
Â
(5) Be a Defensive Driver
It's not always YOU that you have to look out for on the road, but for other drivers. Whenever something happens, be defensive. If you see a car that is swerving, avoid them. If you see someone braking, try to avoid hitting them in the rear. Paying attention to what's going on around you will help you so much!
