Learn More from Reedman-Toll CDJR of Springfield!

The Jeep Wrangler is instantly recognizable for its one-of-a-kind design. However, it is legendary because of its performance both on and off the road. Its performance begins with powerful engine options and capable drivetrains. With engines ranging from a V6 to a plug-in hybrid to a V8, there truly is a Jeep Wrangler engine out there for everyone. Additionally, Jeep offers the Wrangler with standard 4x4 for everyday driving needs or a system to conquer the toughest terrain imaginable. Before you decide on the Jeep Wrangler that's best for you, make sure you understand the engine and drivetrain that powers it on this page from Reedman-Toll Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Springfield.

Pentastar V6

The 2023 Wrangler engine lineup is kicked off by the standard 3.6L V6 engine that delivers 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. Additionally, the V6 engine is geared up with eTorque mild-hybrid technology. The eTorque system provides the engine with an uninterrupted Engine Stop/Start function. ESS is designed to maximize fuel economy by deactivating the engine while the vehicle is idling, leaving the accessories on until the driver releases the brake pedal. Once the brake pedal is released, the engine will seamlessly kick back on. The Wrangler's V6 engine comes standard with a six-speed manual transmission, while an eight-speed automatic transmission is available for drivers who prefer two pedals.

Turbocharged Inline-Four

The next engine available for the 2023 Wrangler is the 2.0L turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine. With its low-inertia turbocharger on the cylinder head, this engine gives the Wrangler 270 horsepower alongside 295 lb-ft of torque. It comes standard under the hood of the Sahara and High Altitude trims, while it is optional for the Sport and Rubicon trim levels. The Wrangler's turbocharged engine comes linked to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Plug-In Hybrid

Jeep introduced the Wrangler 4xe in 2021 as the first-ever plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) for the Jeep Brand. It takes the aforementioned two-liter turbocharged engine and pairs it with an electric vehicle powertrain. This includes two electric motors; one mounted at the front of the engine, replacing the alternator, and the other mounted inside the transmission, taking place of the traditional torque converter. The engine-mounted electric motor provides seamless ESS function, while the transmission-mounted electric motor provides instantaneous torque distribution. Linked to an eight-speed automatic transmission and available for the Willys, Sahara, Rubicon, and High Altitude trims, the 4xe plug-in hybrid system provides 375 horsepower with 475 lb-ft of torque.

HEMI V8

The last available engine for the 2023 Jeep Wrangler is the 392 cubic inch 6.4L HEMI V8, which comes exclusively underneath the hood of the Wrangler Rubicon 392. It makes the fastest, most powerful Wrangler, offering 470 horsepower and a matching 470 lb-ft of torque. The engine is linked to an eight-speed automatic transmission that can be controlled by steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. This setup takes the Wrangler 392 from 0-60 in just 4.5 seconds. The Wrangler 392 is equipped with the Hydro Guide air intake system, which provides three channels to send up to fifteen gallons of water per minute. Additionally, the signature rumble from the HEMI can be heard through a performance exhaust system with a dual-mode function. The two modes, Normal and Performance, control how much engine noise is emitted through the tailpipes.

Jeep Wrangler 4x4 Systems

The Wrangler offers three 4x4 systems throughout the lineup. Standard equipment for the Wrangler is the Command-Trac 4x4 system. Command-Trac gives drivers the option to choose between two-wheel-drive, 4WD high, and 4WD low. While two-wheel drive should be used on clear and dry roads to maximize efficiency. However, drivers should shift into 4-high while driving at higher speeds when traction can be limited. Meanwhile, 4-low should be used while climbing over rugged terrain at low speeds. Selec-Trac comes standard on the Sahara, Rubicon 392, and 4xe trim levels. Selec-Trac 4x4 intuitively reads road conditions constantly and automatically makes adjustments to the torque distribution without any driver input. Lastly, Rock-Trac 4x4 is exclusive to the Rubicon trim. The Rock-Trac transfer case offers a low-range gear ratio of 4:1. This means that when 4-low mode is selected, every four rotations of the transmission output shaft, the transfer case output shaft only spins once, providing better low-speed traction.
