Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe Off Road Capability
Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe Off-Road Capability
Discover its Electrified Toughness Here!
The Jeep brand was founded on providing the public with vehicles that offered superior all-terrain capabilities, which made the Willys Jeep MB famous on the battlefields of World War II. While times have changed, that capability remains the foundation of the Jeep brand, and the Grand Cherokee 4xe stands as a testament to that. The Grand Cherokee 4xe is the second Jeep model to be powered by a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) powertrain. While incorporating electric power, Jeep maintained the Grand Cherokee's off-road capability with impressive power, three legendary 4x4 systems, and an array of available features. If you're an off-road enthusiast in the Philadelphia area, continue reading below to learn just how far beyond the pavement you can go with the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe!Â
Hybrid Setup of the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe
As we mentioned above, the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is powered by a PHEV powertrain. While PHEVs come in many different setups, they all share three common components: an internal combustion engine, one or more electric motors, and a rechargeable battery pack. For the Grand Cherokee 4xe, this setup includes a two-liter turbocharged I-4 engine, an engine-mounted electric motor, a transmission-mounted electric motor, and a 400-volt lithium-ion battery pack. This powertrain gives the Grand Cherokee 4xe an impressive 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. Speaking of torque, one main benefit of adding electric power to a vehicle is the instantaneous torque distribution. Instead of waiting for the engine revolutions to increase in order to achieve the torque necessary to move the wheels over a trail obstacle, the electric power delivers torque to the wheels instantly, as electrons are constantly flowing. In addition to its impressive power, the Grand Cherokee 4xe's fuel efficiency is equally as impressive, as it offers 56 MPGe, 25 miles of all-electric driving, and a total driving range of 470 miles.Â
Does the Grand Cherokee 4xe Come Standard with 4x4?
At the heart of a vehicle's off-road capability is its drivetrain. Jeep has spent decades perfecting the 4x4 systems, tailoring them to meet and exceed the needs of even the most hardened off-roaders. The name 4xe stands for four-by-electric, conjoining the phrases four-by-four and electric, meaning all models come with 4x4 and electric power. For the Grand Cherokee 4xe lineup, Quadra-Trac I comes as standard equipment for most models. This is a full-time automatic 4x4 system that runs in four-high at all times with a single-speed transfer case. While splitting torque by 48% to the front axle and 52% to the rear, Quadra-Trac I uses a brake lock differential to manage wheel spin side-to-side by limiting power to wheels that lack traction and sending more to the wheels with the most traction. Quadra-Trac II is optional, adding a two-speed transfer case, giving you the ability to switch between 4-High and 4-Low, depending on vehicle speed and road conditions. Finally, Quadra-Drive II with a rear electronic limited-slip differential delivers the Grand Cherokee 4xe's maximum capability. The electronic limited-slip rear differential replaces the brake-lock differential of the aforementioned systems. This system can also detect and, in some cases, predict wheel slip with a network of wheel speed sensors and automatically make the necessary adjustments to power output to limit and even eliminate slippage. All 4x4 systems come with Selec-Terrain traction management with Auto, Sport, Snow, and Sand/Mud modes, while Rock mode comes with the Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II systems.Â
Why is the Grand Cherokee 4xe Trailhawk Best for Off-Roading?
While the entire Grand Cherokee 4xe lineup offers impressive performance from pavement to jagged rocks and deep mud, the Trailhawk is the trim level you turn to when you want the top-notch off-road capability that Jeep is known for. The Trailhawk comes standard with the Grand Cherokee 4xe's most capable 4x4 system: Quadra-Drive II with an electronic limited-slip rear differential. Additionally, the Trailhawk comes with Quadra-Lift four-corner air suspension with adjustable ride height. Air suspension offers two primary benefits. First, it provides a smooth ride even on rugged terrain by absorbing the impact of bumps better than traditional coil springs. The second benefit is the adjustable ride height. The Quadra-Lift system comes with Park, Aero, Normal, Off-Road 1, and Off-Road 2. For the Trailhawk, the Off-Road settings are the most important. The Trailhawk's Normal ride height is 8.3 inches. Meanwhile, selecting Off-Road 2 raises the suspension all the way up to 11.3 inches, providing the ground clearance necessary to pass over trail obstacles. The Trailhawk trim is also equipped with electronic sway bar disconnect, which allows you to unlink the front stabilizer bar for maximum wheel articulation. This allows the front wheels to rise and drop further to maintain contact with the trail no matter how uneven the terrain is. Other features exclusive to the Trailhawk trim include an anti-glare hood decal, a forward-facing off-road trail camera, all-terrain tires, Electric Blue tow hooks, high-strength steel skid plates, and more.Â
