Jeep 4x4 Systems Explained
Presented by Reedman-Toll DCJR
Jeep has long been known around the world for its legendary off-road prowess, thanks to unparalleled drivetrain systems. And while Jeep's are so well-known for their capability, the drivetrains that make them so capable aren't so well-known. Different Jeep models provide different 4x4 drivetrains to provide the best possible traction for that specific model. All Jeep 4x4 systems are connected to Selec-Terrain Traction Management System with Auto, Snow, Sand, Mud, and Rock mode. To learn more about what makes Jeep's 4x4 systems so legendary, keep reading below!
Wrangler 4x4 Systems
Command-Trac 4x4: The Command-Trac system is a part-time 4x4 system to provide the best all-weather capability as well as off-road prowess when it's needed. When Command-Trac is in four-lock, it provides a 50/50 torque split between the front and rear axles. The smooth yet strong NV241 GII transfer case gives drivers the ability to shift between two-wheel and four-wheel drive at speeds up to 55 MPH.Â
Rock-Trac 4x4: Rock-Trac also offers extraordinary off-road capability with 4x4 high and low modes. 4-High gives the Wrangler a 50/50 torque split between the front and rear axles. 4-Low offers excellent rock-crawling capability with electronic locking front and rear differentials, a 73.1:1 crawl ratio, and heavy-duty Dana 44 solid axles.

Grand Cherokee 4x4 Systems
Quadra-Trac I: Quadra-Trac 4x4 is Jeep's full-time 4x4 system. It operates in the high-range mode to seamlessly deliver maximum traction wherever your journeys take you, without the need for levers or buttons. The center differential sends 48% of the engine's power to the front wheels and 52% to the rear wheels. Quadra-Trac I also works behind the scenes with the Brake Lock Differential and Four-Wheel Brake Control Systems to provide drivers with confidence in all weather conditions.
Quadra-Trac II: Quadra-Trac II is also available. This 4x4 system is also full-time and operates in 4x4 mode until the vehicle requires additional traction. When the system senses the need for more traction, it electronically engages the clutch pack which is capable of transferring up to 100% of torque to the axle that has the most traction.
Quadra-Drive® II with Rear Electronic Limited-Slip Differential: This provides the capability of the Quadra-Trac II system but adds an electronic limited-slip rear differential. This gives the system the ability to send up to 100% of torque to the wheel with the most traction.

Cherokee 4x4 Systems
Active Drive I: This is a single power take-off unit that automatically delivers a seamless switch in and out of four-wheel drive without the driver needing to intervene. The system also employs a disconnecting rear axle that only turns on the 4x4 system when extra traction is needed to maximize efficiency.
Active Drive II: While Active Drive I is a high-range 4x4 system, Active Drive II takes all the features of the previous system and adds a low-range mode. This low-range mode offers low-speed traction for off-road crawling
Active Drive Lock: Drive Lock, standard on the Cherokee Trailhawk trim, takes Active Drive II and adds a mechanical rear axle lock and Selec-Terrain Rock Mode.

Renegade and Compass 4x4 Systems
Active Drive: Active Drive employs a single power take-off unit and automatically switches in and out of four-wheel drive uninterrupted. It also provides a balanced torque distribution.
